How phones, tablets and Windows players can join a Java Edition server with Geyser and Floodgate, and what they need to know.
Yes, Bedrock players can join a Java server. With the Geyser and Floodgate plugins on a Paper or Purpur server, players on phones, tablets and Windows join by typing the address and a separate Bedrock port. Console players cannot add their own servers, so they cannot join this way.
Minecraft comes in two editions that cannot normally play together. Java Edition is the PC version most servers run. Bedrock Edition is the one on phones, tablets, consoles and the Microsoft Store version for Windows. Two plugins bridge the gap.
Both are plugins, so the server needs plugin software such as Paper or Purpur. Modded servers (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge) do not work with Bedrock players, because Bedrock cannot show modded blocks and items.
Xbox, PlayStation and Switch players cannot add their own servers in Minecraft, only join the featured ones, so they cannot join this way without extra workarounds.
Floodgate puts a dot in front of Bedrock names so they cannot clash with Java names, for example .SteveOnPhone. The normal /whitelist command checks names with Mojang and does not know Bedrock players, so add them with /fwhitelist add <gamertag> instead.
On LunaHost, Bedrock players are one switch in Settings on Paper and Purpur servers. The panel installs Geyser and Floodgate, sets them up, gives the server its own Bedrock port and shows the address and port to share. You can also tick it when you buy the server.
